Down Goes The Silo...

On Wednesday the silo came down.

We haven't used it for the last year or so.  We have started filling silage bags like the one below...

We think the bags are more efficient.  Just a personal preference.  We don't have to wait a day for the silage to settle once the silo is full, then go out and chop another load.  You don't have to level the silage.

The unloader broke last year and the upkeep on the silo was getting to be too expensive.

So yesterday was the day and we said goodbye to the old skyscraper.

The tractor pulled the blocks out from under the silo while the Dodge guided the silo in the right direction as it was falling. If you look closely, you can see the cable in front of the truck. We wanted to make sure it didn't fall on the cattle barn.  That would have been ugly.  All the Dodge fans are loving this picture I'm sure.

Brad took a video of it so maybe we can sell it to Dodge and they will make a commercial from it and we will make a lot of money.

Okay, enough daydreaming....back to the silo demolition.

It only took about 20 seconds for it to reach the ground...

A pile of dust...

Now the clean up process begins.

The metal will be hauled to the local scrap yard and recycled.

Here is the video.....

  1. I know it's old and tired and needed to come down but it was hard watching it fall. Perfect job of getting it down! Hats off to Brad and Tom.

  4. I should show this to my guy. Our unloader and about ten other things keep breaking down, and everything is just so danged old! He's snoring in his chair (after lunch quicky nap), but I will make sure he sees this! Could be the answer to a lot of issues around here!

  5. Loved these photos in b/w. It is weird to see something come down that has always been there...changes the landscape, but it's all good. :) Thankful to have you and Brad on the family farm. :) xoxoxox

  6. Thanks for stopping by my blog the other day! What an neat post...I really enjoyed the video, and will have to show it to my hubby! It's interesting...we stopped doing ag bags just this year. We would use them to refill our silos, and sometimes had trouble with crows poking holes in the bags, and thus losing some of the silage to spoilage.

  8. I love the B&W photo as well. So hard to see "old ag" going when it's been a part of us forever. Then again, we don't see many silos here in CA anyway, just piles of old equipment :)
