My Thoughts About Shopping on Thanksgiving...

I'm sure you've all seen the news and headlines informing the public that some stores will be open on Thanksgiving Day.  KMart is opening at 6AM on Thanksgiving!  I think this is absolutely ridiculous!

I am not a Black Friday shopper.  I'm not against it, I just don't do it.  I can't stand large crowds.  I can't stand the traffic or the long lines.  I understand why people do it.  I know there are wonderful Black Friday deals.  Some of my friends do it and, for most of them, it is tradition.  They get together with their family or friends and spend the day battling the massive amounts of people and have a great time, but it's not for me.

I am against shopping on Thanksgiving!  However, I don't blame the shoppers, I blame the stores and their owners, Presidents, whomever!  I find it sad that they are making their employees work on Thanksgiving.  I understand that for Black Friday to happen, employees have to wake up extremely early the morning after Thanksgiving, or maybe the night of to get all the sale items in order, but making them show up for work at 6AM the day of is insane!  The shoppers could all rally together and insist that they will not shop on Thanksgiving, but let's face it, that won't happen.  If I was one of the shoppers, I would worry that the high ticket items would all be sold out by the time Black Friday actually got here because of the people who chose to bust through the doors at 6AM on Thanksgiving.

There was a story on our local news about an employee at Pizza Hut who refused to work on Thanksgiving.  He was of course fired, but I applaud him for standing up for what he believes in.

What message are we sending to our kids....the next generation?  Are we teaching them to hurry up and chow down their turkey and dressing so we can finish the dishes and go stand in line at stores even though we just got done telling everyone what  we are thankful for.  It's bad enough that right after the Fourth of July, stores start getting out their Christmas decor.  Don't get me wrong.  I love Christmas!!!  In all the commercialism that comes with Christmas, I try to teach my kids the true meaning of Christmas.  (And when I finally heard B tell Mel the other day that "Christmas isn't about presents, it's about celebrating Jesus' birthday," I felt like I may have finally got it through her head).

While searching for the Ecards to go along with this post, I came across this one...
Funny Christmas Season Ecard: Im bored. Think Ill go to the mall, find a great parking spot and sit in my car with my reverse lights on.
Too funny!  One of the things that annoy me most is when a car follows me in the parking lot as I am walking to my car with my arms loaded with bags and three little kids and they wait for me to back out of the parking space.  I make sure to take my time:0)

As always, this is my blog so all opinions here are my own.  Whether you choose to shop on Thanksgiving, Black Friday, or three weeks from now be nice to each other;0)

  1. I am 100% behind you on this! I will happily shop right here on my computer ANY day of the week than stand in line with about 10,000 people I don't know. I think I did the Black Friday once! The only part of it I liked was the lunch WITH drinks! Family FIRST is my motto, and I'm sticking to it!
