BBQ Meatballs...

I love this recipe.  Mainly because it is pretty easy to make, but also because it makes HUGE meatballs.  Not the little dinky ones that requires me to make 100 of them just to fill my crew's tummies.

Put ground beef, oatmeal, mustard, onions, eggs, milk, salt and pepper in a large bowl...
Mix 'em all together.  I prefer to do this with my hands.  I washed them first so no worries ;0)...
Form into large balls and place in a 9x13 pan...
While they are baking, mix up the sauce..

Pour over partially baked meatballs...
Bake for an additional 5 to 10 minutes...
Pure deliciousness...

A Lot of Lovin' For Leontien

I have been given the wonderful opportunity to join The Real Farmwives of American and Friends.  I have also had the chance to meet several other Indiana bloggers at a couple of "brown bag" meetings.  One of our fellow RFOA&F, and blogger, is needing our prayers.  While I have never met Leontien (and I have confidence that I will get to meet her someday) I follow her blog and I have heard her friends talk about her and have experienced the way their faces light up while doing so.

Leontien is a proud cancer survivor, but her cancer is back.
She is from the Netherlands and moved to America because she "had an American Dream about milking cows, hugging my Black Stallion and drive my BMW on dusty back roads with the music cranked up".  You can read about her American Dream here (one of my favorite posts) and the story about Panties With Skulls here.

Leontien is a cancer survivor, but her cancer is back.  So the farmwives have declared this (and everyday) "Love for Leontien Day".

So let's rally together and give Leontien lots of loving and pray that this cancer gets kicked in the butt!!!
Visit her blog and offer some encouraging words!

Or visit the Love for Leontien facebook page set up in her honor.

Chopping Silage...

When I was younger, silage chopping time was one of my favorite happenings on the farm.  The farm was always abuzz with activity year round, but this added a little more activity to the scene.  There was always a tractor and wagon heading in or out of the driveway.

We finished chopping silage a little over a week ago.  Before any equipment goes to the field, there is work that needs to be done such as, sharpening the knives (or blades).  This is what chops the corn stalk into tiny pieces and thus creates a great entree for the cattle!
Several things need to be greased as well to make things run smoothly...

We no longer fill the big silo...
Instead we fill two ag-bags every year....
They are each 200 feet long. It keeps the silage nice and fresh as did the silo, but this is more convenient for us. You just want to keep critters and kids...big and little off of it because if you poke a hole in it it will go bad. That is grounds for paddling. ;)

The process is pretty simple.
You pull up next to the "bagger" with a full wagon and unload the wagon into the blue chute that you see in the photo below.  A conveyor system carries the silage up the blue chute and into the bag...

At the bottom of each wagon are chains that serve as a conveyor that helps push the silage to the front of the wagon.  The beaters, seen below, help loosen the silage...

As the bag fills the tractor hooked to the "bagger" automatically pulls forward and the bag expands...

The tractor that is unloading the silage pulls up also...

This is the chopper that we use to open the fields that way we don't have to knock down any corn in the process...
Once the field is opened up, we hit the field with this bad boy and make some serious cow chow!

The Ceiling Is Up...

A few weeks ago Brad enlisted some help from his friends to help him put the ceiling up in the shop.

This was what the crew looked like from the ground...
It appears they had a pretty good system worked out.
Mel had to use her binoculars to see them way up there...
Ben was injured from a previous accident so he was the designated fork lift driver (normally that is my job, but after doing rock, paper, scissors, he won the deal, and I took off toward the house stomping my feet  I gladly turned it over to him;))
and the designated lawn mower driver...
