A Week of Fun at the County Fair...

Our fair was a week and a half ago and I think I have finally recovered enough to write this post!  The girls aren't in 4-H yet, but they are already getting a pretty big taste of all that it takes to exhibit projects at the fair.  They entered open foods, which Mel received champion for her Buttermilk Coffee Cake and B received first place for her Candy Dandy Peanut Butter Oatmeal Cookies.  Brad's mom helped with all the baking, thank goodness!

Here is Mel making the final product (they made two practice cakes and one final)...
One of the first things to do at the fair is to find the perfect size tire to fit in...

Tuesday was the hog show.  B was in the runt class.  She has done this for three years now and I can definitely see the improvement.  Sorry for the blurry pic.  If you've ever been to a hog show, you know that everything is a blur:)...
Wednesday night we brought the girls' Holstein calves to the fair for the dairy show on Thursday.
This was their first time showing dairy calves and they loved it!

Showing their calves to Great Grandma and Great Grandpa.  Love this picture!...
Brushing her calf before the show...

 So excited...
 Waiting...
 More waiting...
 More waiting...
I think they looked adorable in their all white clothes with blingy belts and boots!

Mel couldn't quite handle her calf by herself, so Brad helped her.  Maybe next year!
B actually let me french braid her hair, which never happens!
Eyes on the judge and your calf at all times..

Part of the cheering section.  Brad's dad and grandparents...

 The judge talking to B...
 All done!

Showing their calves to their cousin Taylor...
Jo loves them just as much as B and Mel..
Special thanks to the Loggan family for helping us out so much this year!  Even though I grew up on a dairy farm, I know nothing about showing dairy calves and Brad showed beef in 4-H!

Even after being at the dairy show most of the day on Thursday, we still came back Thursday night to see all the beef cattle.  The beef show is on Friday and for at least the last 15 years, I have always gone in on Thursday night to see all the beef cattle! I snapped this photo with my phone of Beef Show Eve...
We make the girls aware that the fair isn't about the rides, it's about the animals and projects.  The rides are just a nice bonus!  So, once the projects and animals are finished then we ride rides on Friday night.

Of course, everything is more fun when friends join you!

This picture pretty much sums up how we all felt once the fair was over...

Exhausted!  The best part, I asked the girls what their favorite part of the week was and they both said, "Showing their calves."  Not the rides, not the food...showing!
